We realize at this time in history that we live in an inter-spiritual age. This means that the fruits of genuine spiritual awakening among us are meant to bless us all. One such flowering of the Spirit is known as Reiki. Reiki is a powerful healing energy on the planet today that is available to anyone who wishes to be attuned to it and practice it
An image for Reiki is the description of the “Reiki Master Symbol,” which is: “I radiate the all-permeating light of the Universe.” Dr. Mikao Usui (d. 1926) is the person who rediscovered the ancient wisdom of Reiki. He was highly gifted as a child and because his parents had means he was able to attend a Buddhist school. As he grew older, he traveled to Europe and China to further his education. His curriculum included medicine, psychology and religion as well as the art of divination, which Asians have long considered to be a worthy skill. He had many jobs including civil servant, company employee and journalist, and helped rehabilitate prisoners.
The depth and breadth of his experiences inspired him to direct his attention for discovering the purpose of life. In his study of Zen Buddhism he came across a special state of mind that once achieved would not only provide an understanding of this concept, but would also create the conditions necessary for one to achieve one’s life purpose. Dr. Usui sought out a Zen teacher to realize this. As he continued to search to realize this state of consciousness he was guided to make a 21 day meditation retreat at a Buddhist Temple on Mt. Kurama, which also included fasting.
On March, 1922 and at midnight of the twenty-first day, a powerful light suddenly entered his mind through the top of his head and he felt as if he had been struck by lightning; this caused him to fall unconscious. As the sun rose, he awoke and realized that whereas before he had been very weak, he was now filled with an extremely enjoyable state of vitality that he had never experienced before; a miraculous type of high frequency Reiki energy had displaced his normal consciousness and replaced it with a new level of awareness. In addition to this he received a gift of healing. As he was going down the mountain he fell and injured his toe. As he reached out to touch his bleeding toe it was instantaneously healed.
Realizing that he had received this gift of healing he began to practice this new ability with his family and developed his healing system through experimentation and by using skills and information based on his previous study of religious practices, philosophy, and spiritual disciplines. In 1923 the great Kanto earthquake devastated Tokyo, More than 140,000 people died and over half of the houses and buildings were shaken down or burned. An overwhelming number of people were left homeless, injured, sick and grieving. Dr. Usui felt great compassion for the people and began treating as many as he could with Reiki. As he poured himself in service while traveling to Fukuyama to teach, he suffered a stroke and died March 9, 1926.
When I encountered Reiki I knew immediately I was called to be attuned and to practice it. Why I appreciate so much Reiki is that the focus is always radiating the eternal source light/love from the depths of our hearts. These words of Dr. Usui speak to this:
The practice of Reiki can be incorporated into any religious tradition. It has been my experience in practicing Reiki over many years, and also in attuning others to Reiki, that Reiki opens us to the immediate experience of our radiating divine core. It doesn’t get derailed into doctrines and beliefs that we need to believe in.
I have found that any number of people I have attuned to Reiki have experienced profound blessings. This is because it provided them with a way of spiritual practice that awakened them to the immediate experience of the “All-Permeating Eternal Reiki Light.” You might want to come for a Reiki session. I always access guidance in giving a Reiki session. Asking what Spirit would bring forth that you may realize your call to respond to Spirit makes you aware of the healing you are meant to experience. Being attuned to Reiki may meet a deep need in your life.
